What is a Martingale collar?

Martingale dog collars are designed for walking Sighthounds eg. Greyhounds, Whippets, Lurchers, Italian Greyhounds, Salukis, etc. Because their necks can be wider than their head, they can slip or back out of traditional style dog collars. When adjusted correctly a martingale collar will sit loosely on the dogs neck and gently close, without choking, if the dog pulls on the lead. Martingales can be used for other breeds too as a safety walking collar.

What is a Single Loop collar?

A ‘Single Loop’ also known as a ‘Tag Collar’ or ‘House Collar’ are suitable for all breeds of dog. They expand to fit over the head, then adjust back down to fit the dog using the metal slider with no need for a side release buckle.

What is a Side Release collar?

Side Release dog collars are the type of collars you mainly see in pet shops. They are an adjustable collar with a side release buckle that clips together. We use contoured buckles for a more comfortable fit. For sizing measure around your dog’s neck where the collar sits comfortably.

What size Martingale collar do I need?

We have four sizes, S:8-10 inch. M:11-13 inch. L:14-17 inch. XL: 18-21 inch.

It is important to tell us your dog's neck measurement in the space provided, to ensure you get the correct size, especially if you are in between sizes.

Measure around the neck where a collar normally sits. There is an option to leave your dog's neck measurement on the product page, this will help us make the correct fit if you are not sure you have selected to right size.

There is also a width option, 1.5 or 2 inch. Larger Greyhounds will benefit from a wider collar, and smaller Whippets and Lurchers may be more comfortable in the smaller 1.5 inch width. This is purely customer preference however.

If your dog is not a Sighthound, also measure around the widest part of the head.

If you need a bigger size than listed just get in touch here

How do I put on a Martingale collar?

To begin, using the metal slider, adjust the collar large enough to slip over the head of your dog. Once you have put it on your dog, adjust it to the correct size for your dog’s neck. Adjust it so that the collar can tighten gently without the two pieces of metal hardware on either side of the small loop touching. If the hardware pieces touch together, the martingale collar is too loose, 2-3 finger widths is a good sized gap.
